Can Dogs Eat Slim Jims?

A small bite is unlikely to cause salt poisoning in a healthy dog, but Slim Jims don't make a good treat. They are salty, fatty, processed meat, and the ASPCA warns that very salty foods can make dogs seriously ill.

If your dog grabbed a bite from your hand, keep water close and watch them for the day. If they ate several sticks, a small dog ate a whole one, or the wrapper is missing, call your vet now.

Key takeaways

Tap a card to bring it forward.

  • A single bite of a Slim Jim is a small salt dose for most healthy dogs.
  • Salt is the main danger in these sticks, with fat and spice behind it.
  • A whole stick means far more to a toy breed than to a large dog.
  • Fresh water lowers the risk of salt poisoning, so keep a full bowl out.
  • A swallowed wrapper can block the gut, whatever the stick did.

What is in a Slim Jim

The Slim Jim product page lists 530 milligrams of sodium per serving for the Original sticks. The ingredients include beef, pork, mechanically separated chicken, salt, corn syrup, dextrose and sodium nitrite, and the casing is edible beef collagen.

The sticks are cooked and smoked, so raw-meat germs aren't the concern with a store-bought stick. The casing is edible, though a big swallowed piece of stick or casing could still choke a dog or get stuck. Flavors, sizes and serving counts differ across the range, so check the actual package your dog got into.

Why salt is the main concern

Salt poisoning follows the dose. The Merck Veterinary Manual reports that signs can appear in dogs after about 2 to 3 grams of salt per kilogram of body weight, and that about 4 grams per kilogram can kill. Pet Poison Helpline's page Should You Give Salt to Your Dog? gives 1.5 grams per pound, roughly 3.3 grams per kilogram, as toxic.

Those are grams of salt, and a Slim Jim label lists milligrams of sodium, so the two can't be traded for a set number of sticks. Your vet can work out the dose from the package and your dog's weight.

Two things change the picture more than anything else:

  • Body weight. The dose is counted per kilogram, so one stick in a 7-pound Chihuahua is a much bigger event than one stick in an 80-pound shepherd.
  • Water. Merck explains that animals handle more dietary salt when fresh water is always available, and that salt poisoning mostly happens when water is limited. On a car ride or a hike, bring water for your dog.

Fat and spices come second. The ASPCA names high-fat foods as a pancreatitis concern, and seasonings can upset a dog's stomach.

When signs show up and how long they last

The ASPCA says signs of too much salt usually appear within 12 hours, and that dogs that recover generally do so within 24 to 72 hours. Pet Poison Helpline describes stomach signs first, which can move on to nervous system signs in severe cases.

Early signs: thirst, peeing more, vomiting, diarrhea, not eating and low energy.

Serious signs: weakness, stumbling, confusion, tremors, seizures and collapse. These need a vet right away.

A small bite may cause no signs at all, or a brief upset stomach.

"My dog ate a Slim Jim on a road trip and was fine"

Plenty of dogs have, and that story is real. It still isn't a rule for the next dog or the next pack. One stick is a small dose for a big dog and a large one for a small dog. Your dog may have had water at every stop, which Merck ties to a lower risk. It may have eaten a stick with less salt than another flavor, and left the wrapper behind. Dogs also react differently, and a mild upset can go unnoticed on a busy day. So, let the good outcome stand, and keep the snack bag zipped next time.

Beef sticks, jerky and other look-alikes

"Slim Jim" is a brand, but people use the name for any skinny dried meat stick. The others can differ a lot.

  • Generic beef sticks and pepperoni sticks: sodium, fat and spice vary, and they may contain garlic or onion. Can dogs eat pepperoni? covers pepperoni.
  • Human jerky: often salty, and may contain onion or garlic. Can dogs eat garlic? explains why that matters.
  • Summer sausage, salami and chorizo sticks: separate cured meats with their own labels. See can dogs eat sausage?
  • Jerky treats made for dogs: a different product with its own ingredient list.

Questions about dogs and Slim Jims

Can my dog eat one small piece of a Slim Jim?

A small piece is much less likely to cause salt poisoning than several sticks. It is still salty processed meat, so don't make it a regular treat.

My dog ate a whole Slim Jim. Is that an emergency?

It depends on your dog's size, the product, the amount, water access and signs. Call your vet for a small dog, an unknown amount, or any vomiting, weakness or stumbling.

How much salt is toxic to a dog?

Merck reports signs at about 2 to 3 grams of salt per kilogram and a lethal dose around 4 grams per kilogram. Those are salt figures, and a stick's sodium count is a different number.

What signs should I watch for?

Vomiting, diarrhea, heavy thirst, low energy, weakness, stumbling, tremors, seizures or collapse. The ASPCA says salt signs usually show up within 12 hours.

What if my dog ate the Slim Jim wrapper?

Call your vet. A wrapper can block the gut, and your vet may want to check even if your dog seems normal.

Can cats get sick from Slim Jims too?

Yes. Pet Poison Helpline notes that both dogs and cats can be poisoned by salt.
