If your dog goes missing in Sherman, TX, move quickly. The Sherman Animal Shelter holds strays for three days, and after that an unclaimed animal becomes city property and may go up for adoption or be euthanized, depending on space. The city-run shelter at 1800 E Ida Road is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and closed Sunday and Wednesday. Call Animal Services at 903-892-7255. After hours, Sherman Police Dispatch at 903-892-7290 pages an animal services officer for emergencies like a bite.

Off your property, Sherman's code requires a leash or chain no longer than six feet, held by a person. At home, an unattended dog needs a fence or an approved trolley or zip-line that keeps it in. The city generally bans chaining or tethering a dog unless someone is holding the line, which goes beyond the state's restraint law.

For off-leash play, Sherman Dog Park sits inside Fairview Park at 1121 W. Taylor Street, with separate play areas for different-sized dogs, benches and waste bags. In summer, the National Weather Service's heat guidance for the area says to exercise dogs early in the morning or late in the evening, skip hot pavement and never leave a pet in a closed vehicle.
