Yes. A few small pieces of ripe, peeled kiwi are a fine snack for most dogs, according to the American Kennel Club. The fruit is not poisonous. The trouble comes from how it is eaten: a whole kiwi can lodge in a dog's throat or gut, and too much of the fibrous fruit can cause an upset stomach.
If your dog ate a slice or two, there is nothing to do but watch for loose stool. If they gulped down a whole kiwi, ate a pile of peels, or got into a kiwi product with other ingredients, start with the next section.
Key takeaways

- Plain ripe kiwi flesh is safe for dogs in small amounts.
- Peel it and cut it small. The fuzzy skin is not toxic but is tough to digest.
- The tiny black seeds are fine and do not need to come out.
- A whole kiwi is a choking and blockage risk, especially for small dogs.
- Dried kiwi, smoothies and kiwi candy need a label check before your dog gets any.

| What they ate | What to do |
|---|---|
| What they ateA slice or a few small pieces | What to doNothing special. Some dogs get gas or a soft stool. |
| What they ateA lot of kiwi, or a lot of peel | What to doWatch for diarrhea, vomiting or belly pain, and call your vet if it keeps going. |
| What they ateA whole kiwi, swallowed | What to doCall your vet, even if your dog seems fine. |
| What they ateKiwi juice, jam, yogurt, candy or baked goods | What to doRead the label. Xylitol, chocolate, raisins or alcohol change everything, so call right away if you see one. |
| What they ateBerries from a plant you can't name | What to doCall your vet or a poison line and bring a photo or a piece of the plant. |
For fruit that might block the gut, Pet Poison Helpline's advice is not to wait for symptoms before getting your dog seen. Call right away for gagging, trouble breathing, collapse or retching that brings nothing up.

How much kiwi to give, and how to serve it
Kiwi has no size chart. The AKC's guidance is small amounts, never a whole kiwi, peeled and cut into small pieces or slices. PetMD suggests starting with one small bite and watching how your dog's stomach handles it.
- Peel the kiwi and cut the flesh into pieces smaller than your dog could swallow whole.
- Start with one or two pieces. Give fewer to small dogs and dogs with a sensitive stomach.
- Keep kiwi an extra, alongside your dog's regular food. The AKC notes it offers nothing special compared with other dog-safe fruits.
- Ask your vet first if your dog has diabetes. PetMD flags the fruit's sugar as a concern for diabetic dogs.
Signs to watch for
After a normal piece or two, most dogs show nothing at all. Too much kiwi can bring gas, loose stool, diarrhea, vomiting or a sore belly; the AKC puts diarrhea down to the fruit's insoluble fiber.
A whole kiwi or a big chunk looks different. Watch for:
- gagging, coughing or trouble breathing right after eating
- vomiting again and again, or retching with nothing coming up
- belly pain or not wanting to eat
- straining without passing stool
- tiredness that is out of character
A blockage can take time to show up, and the timing depends on where the piece gets stuck. Any of these signs is a reason to call your vet.
"My dog ate a whole kiwi once and was fine"
That happens, and it was real for that dog. It still does not make whole kiwis safe. A kiwi that passes through a large dog can stick in a small one, because the risk depends on the size of the piece compared with the dog's throat and gut. How much was eaten matters too, as does whether the skin came with it, and whether the dog has a sensitive stomach. A blockage may also take a while to cause signs, so an evening with no problems does not settle it. Peel and slice, every time.
Kiwi products and look-alikes
- Golden or yellow kiwi: the same kind of fruit with yellow flesh. Treat it like green kiwi.
- Kiwi berries (hardy kiwi): small, smooth-skinned fruits from the same plant family. Share them the way you would kiwi: a little at a time, cut small.
- Dried kiwi: often has added sugar or preservatives, and it packs more fruit into each bite. Give less, and only plain.
- Kiwi smoothies, yogurt, jam and candy: check for xylitol, chocolate, raisins, grapes or alcohol. The added ingredient decides the risk. Can dogs eat grapes? explains why raisins matter.
- Karaka berries: a New Zealand tree fruit, sometimes confused with kiwi. It is a different plant, and a peer-reviewed review in the New Zealand Journal of Botany reports that it has poisoned dogs, in some cases after a single fruit. If your dog ate berries from a tree you can't identify, call your vet.

Questions about dogs and kiwi
Can dogs eat kiwi skin?
It is better to peel it. The skin is not toxic, but the AKC says it is tough and high in fiber, which can be hard to digest and may cause an upset stomach.
Is kiwi good for dogs?
Kiwi has fiber, vitamin C and potassium, but dogs do not need it. The AKC says it is no better than other dog-safe fruits, so treat it as an occasional snack.
Can puppies eat kiwi?
A tiny peeled piece is fine for most puppies. Cut it smaller than you would for an adult dog and watch for loose stool.
Can kiwi give a dog diarrhea?
Yes, if they eat too much. The fruit is high in insoluble fiber. Cut back and call your vet if diarrhea lasts or comes with vomiting.
Can dogs eat dried kiwi?
Only plain dried kiwi, and less of it than fresh. Many dried kiwi snacks are sugared or treated, so check the label.
