Keeping your dog's rabies shots current matters more than usual in San Antonio, TX right now. On August 19, 2026, the City of San Antonio reported a confirmed rabies case in an owned dog, the first in a pet dog in Bexar County in more than a decade. The city said San Antonio and Bexar County were in a wild-animal rabies outbreak, with 22 cases in June and July 2026, compared with two to three in the same months of 2024 and 2025.

The city's animal code also requires every dog to be microchipped, with the chip's registration kept current. Summer adds its own rules: the city's pet heat-safety guidance says outdoor dogs must have fresh water, shelter and shade, and chain tethers are not allowed at any time of year. Police and Animal Care officers may break a car window to reach an animal in danger.
